How to Keep Your Invisalign Aligners Clean and (Nearly) Invisible
At Murrayville Dental, we love watching our patients regain confidence through Invisalign. It’s a discreet and comfortable way to straighten your teeth, but keeping the aligner trays as close to invisible as possible does require some light maintenance.
Here are our tips for how to keep your aligners clean, clear, and performing their best throughout your Invisalign journey.
1. Clean Your Aligners Daily
Invisalign trays can accumulate bacteria, plaque, and food particles if not cleaned regularly. Each morning and night, gently rinse and brush your aligners using a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented soap. Avoid toothpaste since many kinds are too abrasive and can create tiny scratches that make aligners appear cloudy.
If your aligners start to look dull, you can soak them in Invisalign Cleaning Crystals or a mild denture-cleaning solution for 15–20 minutes. This keeps them fresh and odour-free.
2. Rinse Every Time You Remove Them
Even a quick rinse goes a long way. Whenever you take your aligners out, (to eat, drink, or brush) give them a rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic and change how they fit. Keeping them moist also prevents saliva and plaque from drying on the surface, causing further stains and bacteria buildup.
3. Brush and Floss Before Reinserting
Because Invisalign aligners sit snugly over your teeth, any leftover food or plaque gets trapped against your enamel. Always brush and floss before putting them back in to avoid staining, odours, or decay (in worse case scenarios). Think of it as giving both your teeth and aligners a clean slate every time.
4. Store Them Safely
It’s easy to accidentally toss or lose aligners when they’re not in your mouth, especially during meals. Always keep your aligner case with you and store your trays inside it. Avoid napkins, pockets, or random surfaces that might be abrasive or cause your trays to get warped or damaged. Proper storage not only protects your aligners but also keeps them hygienic between uses.
5. Avoid Staining Foods and Drinks
Because Invisalign aligners are clear, staining can happen quickly. Remove them before drinking coffee, tea, wine, or anything pigmented. Water is always safe, and is in fact, the best drink for your smile during Invisalign treatment.
Confidence That Lasts Beyond Treatment
Invisalign isn’t just about achieving a straighter smile; it’s about the confidence that comes with caring for it. Patients often tell us they smile more freely, feel better in photos, and can even speak more easily once their treatment is complete.
